Landscape photography has always been about grand scenery. The composition techniques that we’ve discussed are meant to draw the viewer into that stunning view even without actually going to that place. This time around, let us discuss about the different types of landscape photography that could add to our knowledge of the genre. Here’s nature photographer Evan Dombroski to tell us more.

Representational

Another term for this is the straight or straight descriptive style, says Evan Dombroski. Among the different types of landscape photography, it is the most natural and most realistic due to its bare-bones approach of not adding too much props or any artificial components. It relies on techniques of composition, framing, and lighting. There are no visual manipulation or artifice. It is safe enough to say that with the representational style, the popular phrase ‘no filter added’ finds its true origins.

Impressionistic

Vague simply describes this style of landscape photography in one word. Sometimes it is called elusive, in a sense that the picture only gives an impression of a landscape instead of truly representing one. In other words, according to Evan Dombroski, an impressionistic landscape photograph is the opposite of a representational type. Furthermore, it employs photographic techniques to achieve its vague and elusive qualities, almost dreamlike if you look at it plainly.

Abstract

Although it is a type of landscape photography, its method is quite different from the other major types as it only use components of the scenery as graphic components. Thus it is also known as the graphic style. Design is more important here than a realistic representation, says Evan Dombroski. In here, the focus lies on an area within the landscape itself, and the use of silhouettes or other lighting techniques highlight shapes instead of revealing anything but suggested.
